Beautification
A
beautiful neighborhood is important to our residents, and we place
emphasis on attention to city codes relating to cleanliness. Our
residents work together to ensure that the neighborhood is continually
well maintained.
The
southern boundary of our neighborhood runs along East Northwest Highway
and is perhaps where the most visible entrances of our neighborhood are
located. In 1998, volunteers installed planting beds along
the highway service road from Capri Drive to Hackney Lane and began an
ongoing beautification program. Thirty young crepe myrtle trees were
planted there, along with many hardy, native shrubs and perennials.
Volunteer gardeners gave their time to maintain this area and keep it
attractive. Funding came primarily from neighbors’ donations.
During 2006, after the formation of our Highland Meadows Neighborhood
Association, an ongoing revitalization of the area was begun, and many
of the planting beds were replaced with Bermuda sod for easier care and
maintenance. While most funding now comes from the
neighborhood association and designated donations, neighbors also
contribute aluminum cans for recycling to help support this
project. Securely bagged cans can be dropped off anytime at a
neighborhood location, and they will be recycled for this
project. For more details and location, contact voice mail
(214-967-5081) or the HMNA Communications Chairperson:
communications followed by highlandmeadowsna.org.
The
Mediterranean Gardens Women's Club also established a beautification
project at Mediterranean and Northwest Highway. The attractive
landscaping at this very visible entrance to our neighborhood is
maintained and funded by this group of women who live in close
proximity to that area.
YARD
OF THE MONTH
In May 1999, a Highland Meadows Yard of the Month
Committee was formed. Nominations are submitted by neighbors
and weighed by this committee. The committee chooses a yard
they consider to be most attractive and well kept and may be selected
from nominations or committee preferences.
A
Yard of the Month sign is placed in the resident’s yard for
an entire month and a write-up about the yard is presented in our
communications e-mail bulletin. With the
recipient’s permission, a photograph is posted on our
website. The winner receives a certificate of appreciation
for the beautification of our neighborhood, as well as a color
photograph of their yard. When the sign is removed, the family receives
a gift of a perennial as a token of thanks from the
neighborhood. Yards are selected only once, with the
exceptions of the holiday award presented in December or if the home is
sold and a new resident takes ownership.
Neighbors
may nominate a yard by leaving a message on our voice mail
(214-967-5081) or by using e-mail: yom followed by
@highlandmeadowsna.org.
Preferably, include your name and contact information (phone or e-mail)
as well as the address of the yard. If you care to do so,
also mention why you think this yard should be
chosen. Nominations should be submitted by the
first of every month. Nominations received after the first of
the month will be considered for the next month’s
award. Committee members will select a yard by the 7th
of each month, and the sign will be placed in the yard by the 15th
of the month, where it will remain for one month.
