Neighborhood Petwatch

Our neighborhood Petwatch program was established to reunite lost neighborhood pets with their families. During the six-year period from 1999 - 2004, our residents saved 716 animals from the streets. Many family pets have been reunited with their families, a small number were sent to shelters, and numerous strays and found animals have been placed in loving, new adoptive homes. In unavoidable situations, only a few were sent to the city animal shelter.

Our Petwatch mission is to reunite lost pets with their families. In most neighborhoods, when a beloved family pet becomes lost, there is nowhere to turn except to the city pound. Not so, here. Our Petwatch Coordinator, right here in the neighborhood, provides residents the opportunity to get the word out fast when a pet escapes the confines of home. The Pet Hotline, available 24/7, serves as a communication link between residents in our area who lose a pet and those who spot a stray animal. This telephone number, along with the Petwatch e-mail bulletin, is the first line of defense in locating a lost pet or removing a stray animal from the street into a safe environment. This unique program is a life-saving reality!

Pet Registrations -- We register neighborhood pets to help serve our residents better. Our Coordinator keeps registration books and can research found animals at a glance. If a registered animal is found and contained, it can be reunited almost immediately. Registration is free and can be done online. The registration form is on the HMNA website referenced below.

Volunteer Opportunities -- Petwatch offers a vast array of volunteer opportunities for our pet-loving neighbors. Foster homes are always needed for found animals that require a secure yard while their families are being located. Sometimes animals need to be transported to shelters; now and then an animal needs to be taken to a veterinarian.

Petwatch Booklet -- Our neighborhood developed a detailed instruction booklet in partnership with the SPCA of Texas, which provides guidelines for establishing a neighborhood Petwatch such as ours. This Petwatch Kit serves as a model for any neighborhood that would like to establish a Petwatch. These booklets can be obtained from our Coordinator. Warren Cox, former President of the SPCA of Texas said, "A pet owner can't beat this system." For more information about the SPCA of Texas, visit the website: www.spca.org.

Contact Karen Briggs, our Petwatch Coordinator, by Petwatch voice mail (214-967-5210) or e-mail the petwatch address listed on our Officers page. You may receive weekly pet bulletins by joining this neighborhood e-group.

Our life-saving Petwatch program has been given Special Recognition by the City of Dallas and continues an ongoing relationship with the SPCA of Texas.

Hey everyone,
Petwatch volunteers have been busy updating and creating and we have come up with a way to add photos and more information to a new site just for us. We have created a BLOG site that will hold our photos, all the current lost and found and much more.

We will continue to have the current HMNA website and the Petwatch website http://hmnapetwatch.topcities.com/. These sites will house permanent Petwatch info.

The topcities account will be where anyone can access the forms for our Petwatch. You can register your pet, report a lost and found pet there, find pet tips and permanent info about our petwatch.

The new Blog account will be the most up to date source for info on our lost and found pets. You still submit your information as before, via email to the address listed on the Officers page, via the topcities website report forms mentioned above, or via voicemail; 214-967-5210. Then a petwatch volunteer will post the Blog directly on that site. If it is urgent, we will send you a note on the current list service account. You can access the BLOG anytime you want to look over the postings.

Currently you can click on:
http://hmnapetwatch.blogspot.com/ to view the BLOG's new features and information.

Lost and Found pets are still our primary concern, but we will continue to post Available for Adoption, Neighborhood Pet Info, Local Animal Events, Wildlife concerns, Amazing Animal Tails and Success Stories. If you would like to submit anything for our blog, please make sure you do NOT use inflammatory language, and make a note whether we can post your personal info or not. Typically we post first names, block names, and the Petwatch number, but you may allow us to use your phone number, email address etc..Keep in mind the BLOG can be read by anyone on the internet. We still will protect your privacy and encourage you to send in true neighborhood animal stories and local animal info with your byline.

We hope this new format will make our Petwatch more efficient and user friendly. Thanks so much for your attention. Petwatch Coordinator, Karen Briggs
