Yard of the Month

Since May 1999, each month during the growing season, our Yard of the Month Committee selects a recipient whose yard they consider to be most attractive and well kept. Nominations from neighbors are weighed, and the award is presented to the most deserving family. A sign is placed in the award-winning yard for the entire month, and the recipient receives a certificate of appreciation for the beautification of our neighborhood as well as a color photograph of their yard. Yards are selected only once, with the exception of the "holiday" award presented in December

July 2, 2008
We now have a new volunteer to spearhead our Yard of the Month program.  Practically-new-resident, Lindsay Kelly, is willing and ready to get started.  Lindsay and husband Brooks moved here from the Plano area in January.  She is a third grade elementary school teacher and is ready to move forward with the program this summer while she has some time off.  Our program is set up so that award winners will have our Yard of the Month sign placed in their yard for one month and Lindsay will announce the winner in this email bulletin. She will photograph the yard and give the resident a glossy photo sheet and certificate. A photo will be posted on our website, as well.

Here’s how YOU can help:  Contact her right away with your nominations—your favorite yards.  This will give her committee something to focus on for the month of July.  About 70 yards have been chosen since we started the program in 1999, and yards are chosen only once—unless a new resident now lives there.  (Neighbors can also win the December holiday award even if they’ve won a monthly award.)  We have 1390 homes, so there are over 1300 yards that have NOT been recognized.  The committee will check your nomination against a list of previous winners to see if the address qualifies.

Speaking of “the committee”...a couple more volunteers are needed to assist Lindsay.  If you’d like to help with the selection process, contact her:  lindsay.kelly@risd.org.  Committee members will become familiar with our neighborhood yards and usually communicate by email and phone rather than attending committee meetings.  Selecting a monthly yard, contacting the resident, and placing and removing the yard sign are the primary tasks—besides the photo/certificate aspect, which Lindsay is prepared to do.
